Study Task 5 - Practical Approaches

I intend to visually research the contextual references i use throughout my essay, as well as the theories i have researched, such as the uncanny, uncanny valley, and how this relates to my project and stop-motion. I will use my sketchbook to lay out my thoughts visually and explore the topics i have chosen further. I intend to investigate why stop-motion is so effective as a horror media through a range of different video tests. I intend to create models in plasticine and perform tests in stop-motion to see how people react to them and if they perceive them as unsettling. I may experiment with changing the frame rates and seeing how this affects the motion and how the viewer perceives what is happening. I will make vague shapes that transform into other things and move. I was inspired to conduct this experiment after watching and writing about 'Bobby Yeah."  Many of the shapes in this animation are quite tentacle-like which i will take into my own study. Once i have conducted the tests i intend to ask a group of people which animation they respond to most negatively, to see if there is any relation to the uncanny in what i observe, and if this effects how scary they find it. I intend my outcome to be a conclusion of what i have observed through the study and my research which makes stop-motion so effective as a horror media.
